Addis Ababa, December 01,2004 (WIC)- The Unity of five Eritrean Organizations said that they give their full support and approval to the five-point proposal for peace tabled by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

According to a statement of the organizations posted on Awate website, they said a new chapter to the complicated situation that bedeviled the relation between the two countries for the last several years has finally unfolded.

The organizations which expressed their regret for the Eritreans who are represented by a regime that recognizes no civilized law but those of the jungle at this crucial time of our history, said that after having suffered for so long, it has given the first signal of hope and sense of respite to the brotherly peoples of the two countries.

The statement said Ethiopia's bold acceptance of the international border decision in principle and in the main (delimitation), though belated, has removed the shroud of suspicion that pervaded among many, particularly peace-loving Eritreans, unleashing wild speculations on the real motives and intentions of the Ethiopians.

Unfortunately, the time it took for this episode to happen helped no one but the clique in power, it said, adding that the faith of the forces of peace and democracy both inside and outside their country has now recovered as the light at the end of the tunnel has come at last.

The organizations said by restoring the hope of peace to their people, and removing their psychological bondage to war in the process, the peace initiative has admittedly denied the ugly and irredeemable regime its only remaining card for staying in power.

“Taken in good faith and wisdom by all sides, and given the multi-faceted complications and overlaps that abound on the ground along the border of the two countries,” it said “Ethiopia’s proposal for negotiation and the need for 'give and take' during the process of its application (demarcation) is both reasonable and understandable.”

According to the statement the role of the peace initiative is crucial in bringing the border dispute to its final conclusion and laying the ground works for durable peace between the two neighborly peoples could neither be lightly taken, nor underestimated.

The organizations said, “We call on the Eritrean people, opposition organizations and the Eritrean Armed Forces to give the Ethiopian peace proposal their objective attention and consideration.”

The Union of Eritrean Liberation Front - National Congress (ELF-NC), Democratic Movement for the Liberation of Eritrean Kunamas (DMLEC), Eritrean People's Movement (EPM), Democratic Organization of Red Sea Afars (DORSA), and Eritrean Revolutionary Democratic Front (ERDF) finally said in the face of the considerable havoc wrought to their people and country by the regime and its war-mongering policies, they have left no choice but work for the peace process from which the people on both sides to the dispute can only come out as winners.
